The Dare

By: Ami Wilber Mosher

In dark,
A well of night,
I stood there waiting,
Nerves wound tight.

My friends had laughed,
And then they dared me.
They thought I’d leave,
The cemetery.

So there I stayed,
With mossy stones.
Full of fear,
And all alone.

My breath plumed out,
In icy bits,
As I clung onto,
My failing wits.

Nothing to fear!
I’m not a believer!
But I knew my thoughts,
Had been my deceiver.

I knew that there,
Were things of old,
That chill your bones,
And steal your soul.

I prayed to make it,
Through the night,
And see the glorious,
Morning light.

I felt a touch,
As cold as ice,
And through my fearful heart,
It sliced.

And then it swept
Across my face,
Around my neck,
It’s finger traced.

I felt despair,
And all alone,
Clenching deep,
And to the bone.

Heartbeat pounding,
Like a drum.
I tried to move,
But couldn’t run.

I heard a scream,
From fears cup sipped,
And knew the scream,
was my lips.

A voice was whispered,
In my ear,
“You shall not leave,
We want you here!”

My friends were wrong,
It’s safe to say,
I won’t be leaving,
Here today.
